Being Realistic Isn’t Realistic: The Role of Innovation and Creativity in Inclusive Education
A vital element of a successful inclusive education program is the ability of educators, students, and family members to be innovative and creative in developing ways to support students with disabilities in regular classes. Unfortunately, many of us doubt our ability to be innovative and consequently can miss some of the joy and excitement in coming up with creative workable solutions.

In this full-day workshop, Norman Kunc and Emma Van der Klift take the mystery out of innovation and through stories, examples and personal experience, show how all of us have the ability to step beyond conventional solutions to find and develop unique (and even low-tech!) ways to support students. They will also highlight some of the strategies they have developed, both as disabled students and now as adults, to work around the challenges they face.

Brain Frames
This training is for grade K-12 special education or general education teachers of any subject area who want effective tools for teaching students to actively organize their language and thinking in academic tasks. Brain Frames are a set of graphics that organize, but they aren’t traditional graphic organizers. This workshop introduces the six Brain Frames and provides participants with hands-on practice in using each of them for a variety of instructional purposes.

Forget about pre-made handouts — a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and the right strategy will do the job. By drawing their own Brain Frames from scratch, teachers and students can show what’s in their brains by constructing a visual “frame” so they can see, reflect on, and share what they know and understand. Thus, they can visually capture their ideas graphically without being constrained or frustrated by someone else’s pre-made organizer.

Brain Frames are visual-spatial displays of the patterns underlying basic things we do with language every day.

All day, every day, from a very young age, we:

tell what we know
sequence ideas
show contrasts
identify causes
recognize effects
categorize
show relationships between concepts

Awareness of these patterns is largely unconscious to most people but directly influences comprehension, and academic success.

Brain Frames give students organizing frameworks needed for academic success. They are a manageable set of graphics that will help them “do school.” They can use them in any subject and any grade level. Similarly, Brain Frames give teachers a manageable set of effective graphics that they can use across their curriculum.

Creating the Learning Support Classroom of Tomorrow
This workshop will introduce a new framework for developing highly personalized learning support classes that are measured, ambitious, research-based, and structured around one-to-one learning.

After unpacking the framework, participants will use their unique context(s) to create and/or improve their own learning support classrooms. In addition to improving their learning support class, participants are invited to join a community that will continue to support each other in the future.

The MARIO Framework is primarily designed for middle and high school learning support teachers to provide a customizable structure for improving the overall effectiveness of dedicated learning support classes. Unlike many educational platforms, the MARIO Framework is completely free and run by fellow teachers in the field. In addition to being an effective approach to helping students reach their potential through personalized instruction, the framework’s modular design allows teachers to increase their impact in multiple ways.

Teachers can instantly access quality resources and strategies, share what works for them with others, and leverage an opportunity to improve already existing content.6.5.0

Going Beyond the Behavior ABCs
While primary school teachers may understand the basic ABCs (Antecedent>Behavior>Consequence) of analyzing a child’s behavior, there are still gaps in understanding regarding what to do about a student’s behavior both in the moment, and long-term. Teachers also struggle with applying the theoretical understanding of how to manage problem behavior to the actual students in their classrooms.

This workshop will review the functions of a students’ behavior and will then delve intospecific case studies relevant to participants’ experience and backgrounds within International Schools. Participants will dive into students’ needs, behaviors, and previous interventions to create support plans that address proactive strategies and interventions, as well as practical tools to help in daily classroom life when behaviors arise.

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to create effective student support plans to address positive behaviors with students in their classrooms and across their schools. This workshop will focus on students aged 4 – 12.

Practical Strategies for Reducing Anxiety and Disruptive Behavior in the Classroom
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States reports that one in four thirteen-eighteen-year-olds has had an anxiety disorder in their lifetime. Without intervention, these children are at risk for poor performance, diminished learning, and social/behavior problems in school. Understanding the role anxiety plays in a student’s behavior is crucial and using preventive strategies are key to successful intervention. Effective behavior plans for these students must avoid the reward and punishment-based consequences from traditional behavior plans and focus instead on the use of preventive strategies and on explicitly teaching coping skills, self-monitoring, and alternative responses.

As a result of this workshop participants will be able to easily implement preventive tools, strategies, and interventions for reducing anxiety, increasing self-regulation, executive functioning, and self-monitoring.

Singapore Math: Supporting Students with Dyslexia in Math
Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. However, despite it being a language-based difficulty, there are students with dyslexia who display difficulties in Math as well. What could be the reason(s) for this and how can these students be supported?

Suitable for those who are new to Singapore Math, this workshop will look at how the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach can be used to support students with dyslexia in the common areas of difficulty, such as place values and the four basic operations. Learners with learning difficulties find it difficult to understand these concepts without concrete or pictorial representation. They need sensory experiences to develop their understanding of such abstract concepts. Using concrete manipulatives, such as unifix cubes or base-ten blocks can help them ‘see’ , for example, what place values are.

Mathematics word problems are also another area of difficulty for students with dyslexia. Participants will explore how Bar Modelling can be used to break down word problems into smaller chunks and translate Mathematical information into diagrams. With suitable hands-on practice, participants will be able to apply the different strategies to support their students with dyslexia.

Start Initial Communication with Parents & Differentiate Support Strategies - A Parent’s Journey”
Having difficult conversations is never straightforward. Yet the inner voice which dwells within rarely tells us when we need to have a sometimes awkward dialogue with someone—a conversation that, if it took place, would enhance the process, bolster collegiality, and broaden partnership beyond borders. Fear drowns that inner voice—forcing us to put the exchange off. The outcome of not having that uncomfortable conversation is costly. This workshop will focus on essential cultural factors, strategies, skills, empathy, and ultimately the courage and strategies required to have difficult conversations with parents and stakeholders.

The Imagery-Language Foundation: Teaching all Children to Read and Comprehend
This session explores the nature and role of imagery in reading and comprehension for all readers, including struggling learners and those with dyslexia. Many children experience weakness in creating imagery, resulting in poor literacy skills. New research suggests that the dual-coding of imagery and language is a critical factor in language comprehension and in word reading. Supported by key behavioral and neurologic research findings, and 35 years of instructional experience, this session reveals that imagery is a primary sensory-cognitive power source that can be developed for reading independence in all children, including those diagnosed with dyslexia.

How to Build a Student-Monitoring System Using G Suite
For educators to make effective data-based decisions they need the right kind of data at the right time. Often, however, commercially available systems for collecting behavioral and academic student data can be costly, culturally irrelevant, and unreliable. To empower educators in our school to be successful decision-makers, we used Google Forms and Sheets to build our own system from the ground up, which we aligned to a multi-tiered system of support. The data we collected using this system is function-based, evidence-driven, confidential, and timely; and we have used it for screening, progress monitoring, and evaluation purposes. In this workshop, I will be sharing the method and tools we used to make this possible.

Inclusion: The Integrated Experience Between Significant Learners and Their Community
Schools around the world are beginning to take note of the need for providing inclusive school environments to better support all learners. ISM is one of those schools. For years ISM had families who wanted to have all their children benefit from an international education, but for those children with more significant learning needs attending an international school such as ISM was not a possibility. In August of 2015 ISM became a pioneer, and opened one of the few Specialised Learning Support (SLS) classrooms in Asia.

Our presentation will guide you through the process of developing a program that meets each child's individual needs while ensuring inclusion in their community. We will talk about how we differentiate and adapt for a variety of learning needs, and what the responsibility is of all teachers when working towards inclusion. We will discuss topics such as the importance of staffing and access to resources. A main area of focus will be discussions on the importance of educating the community to ensure effective inclusion across a variety of environments. We will look at the next steps for ISM as we strive to become a more inclusive community.

We Can Do Hard Things
Life is hard, and it's often scary. No matter who we are or where we come from, we inevitably encounter difficulties, and rather than run from or avoid them, we are usually served best by facing them head on. Mentalities such as comfort zones and fear of failure tend to hold us back from achieving our full potential. As educators, we need to take notice of this, own it, and arm ourselves with a proactive toolbox of ideas, skills, and strategies that we may use to improve not only our own lives, but the lives of our students. Join this Mom of three boys with Autism/LS Coordinator for a conversation about her personal and professional exploration into turning life's challenges into opportunities for growth for her students, her children, and herself.

A Picture of Success: Improving Reading and Language Comprehension in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Some children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) do not develop language while others are verbal; some have weak basic reading skills while some read accurately. This presentation examines three sensory-cognitive functions—concept imagery, phonemic awareness, and symbol imagery—which affect language-processing skills, such as comprehension and reading. Many students experience decoding, spelling, or comprehension difficulties that may actually be the result of weaknesses in these underlying sensory-cognitive functions. Behavioral and neurologic research will be presented to illustrate how improvements in imagery result in positive changes in word reading, comprehension, and specific areas of brain function in students with ASD.

Emotion Coaching: A neurological approach to self-regulation
This introductory presentation is about building students’ emotional intelligence: helping them to understand their emotions by recognizing what they are feeling and why so that they can gradually regulate their own emotions and behavior. Research demonstrates that children who receive this language of connection and communication are significantly more likely to do better in school, have more friends, display more confidence, experience less illness, and grow up to be happy and successful adults.
This presentation will provide you with:
A research-based foundation for your school’s social-emotional learning program(s)
A working model of emotion coaching that can be immediately implemented into classrooms
An understanding of the neuropsychological processes that underlie emotional intelligence

Inclusive [Outdoor] Education
Schools do a really amazing job at planning outdoor education experiences to help students grow their skills beyond the classroom. But what does this look like for our students with special needs? The truth is, oftentimes students with needs are removed from trips of this nature due to staff, parent, and even student anxieties. These anxieties generally stem from social and behaviour concerns. However, with a little pre-planning and effective communication, these students can be afforded the same opportunities as our general population and, in fact, thrive and grow socially and as well as develop their metacognition, resilience, and agency. By attending this session, participants will leave with an understanding of the value of inclusive outdoor education as well as practical strategies for accommodations and managing anxieties around the experience.

New Students; New Questions: Supporting The Classroom Teacher in an Inclusive School
As an increasing number of students with disabilities are being included into regular classes, there is growing consensus among teachers about what supports need to be in place for inclusion to be manageable and successful. Based on personal experience and the input of classroom teachers throughout North America, Emma Van der Klift and Norman Kunc examine five areas of support which need to be present if teachers are to welcome students with disabilities into their classrooms: This session also addresses the question of fair and appropriate evaluation and briefly describes some ideas for supporting students with atypical or disruptive behaviour.

Keynote 2 "Ability and Opportunity in the Rearview Mirror: Two Insider Perspectives on Inclusive Education"
The last three decades have seen a huge proliferation of information and research on strategies that can be used to successfully support disabled children in regular classrooms. Most of these strategies, however, have come from educators and other non-disabled people, leaving the perspectives of disabled students either unnoticed or ignored.

In this provocative workshop, filled with humour and personal anecdotes Norman Kunc and Emma Van der Klift will draw on their experience as two adults with different disabilities who experienced the school system in different ways and with different degrees of success. They will argue that there is an ongoing confusion about the relationship between ability and opportunity that we must grapple with in order to ensure that inclusive education truly lives up to its promise.

In the absence of an evaluation, pairing evidence-based interventions with individual student needs can seem like quite the mystery. Yet using simple, readily available, and FREE methods, it becomes Elementary, My Dear Watson.

The secrets of four underlying cognitive skills will be unraveled using behavioral observations, parent report, teacher feedback and work samples. Observation and data collection forms will be provided to help you dissect and organize the clues as each case study unfolds. This simple data collection process will help to identify a target for intervention. It also aids in distinguishing between transition, behavioral regulation, language acquisition and learning differences.

Once the case has been closed and the data aligned, Tier 1 and 2 evidenced-based strategies are provided for each profile.

Intrigued? Does a certain name spring to mind? Nominations now being accepted for case studies. Please contact me for further details.

Rethinking inclusive technology for students with diverse learning needs
Previously assistive technology was often large and expensive purpose-built devices or software which made students accessing it stand out for all the wrong reasons. Assistive, or rather inclusive technology in 2019 is portable, flexible and cheaper than its predecessors and more than likely inbuilt or available in or on the technology all students are accessing.

The cost and look of inclusive technology is an important aspect of its effectiveness but it has other benefits as well. Inclusive technology supports the provision of a personalised approach to learning and the development of learner agency. Providing the tools required for students to make their own decisions about how they will access information, process meaning, express their understandings and reflect and respond on their learning.

This session will provide participants information on the range of free and paid inclusive technology available for students to facilitate participation and enhance overall wellbeing, while supporting participation across curriculum areas including literacy, maths, research and study skills.

Talk To Me: What Educators (and Others) Can Learn About De-escalation From Hostage Negotiators
Hostage negotiators must quickly establish trust, build rapport, and foster collaboration in extreme crisis situations. The skills they use to help people to de-escalate can be helpful for those of us trying to support or intervene with someone who is upset or experiencing a crisis. After spending a year interviewing prominent hostage negotiators from all over North America, Emma summarizes the relational, non-coercive approaches negotiators use and suggests how educators can use these ideas not only to help the person we are supporting to de-escalate, but also to help de-escalate ourselves.

The Dos and Don’ts of Creating Digital Content in an Inclusive Classroom
Converting printed classroom and curriculum material into accessible, digital content is essential when considering an inclusive classroom. The printed lesson worksheet or the textbook that weighted a ton, served us in the past. Print as the only option is a problem, it was a one size fits all model of learning content delivery - no consideration for individual students need to read, reflect and express their understanding differently.

Educational technology has changed all this, providing an ever increasing range of digital tools to support inclusive classrooms. How? By providing students with digital content, and in so doing providing multiple ways to access and process information, and multiple ways to reflect, respond and express their understanding.

The thing is, creating digital content is more than just turning the worksheet into a PDF and sharing with our students. Access to a digital document is one thing, but more importantly providing students with a variety of opportunities to process, reflect and respond is key.

This session will provide an introduction to the importance of creating digital content in an inclusive classroom. Participants will leave with practical strategies to help them navigate the dos and don’ts of creating accessible, inclusive digital content in their classroom.

Differentiating Assessment to Meet all Needs
The focus of this session is on how Learning Support teachers can collaborate with general education teachers in order to differentiate assessments based on key factors such as CONTENT (i.e. will we test for everything, working with teachers to break down the standard and figure out what skills the student needs to have to show proficiency, etc.), PROCESS (i.e. doing it orally, having a lower readability level, etc.), and PRODUCT (i.e. alternate assessment ideas).

By focusing on these areas the team can adjust the level of the assessment to fit the students' needs, providing an appropriate challenge, while ensuring that grade-level standards remain in place.

Friendship circles and buddy systems have often been created in an attempt to help students with disabilities feel more included in their neighbourhoods schools. Neuroscience: from Research to Practice for ALL
This presentation will demonstrate that developing a working knowledge and shared understanding of educational neuroscience is one of the most transformative acts that a school can undertake, with the power to enhance teaching and learning at all levels. Mind, Brain, Education (MBE) and the Science of Learning (SoL) are complementary, rapidly developing fields. It is essential that teachers and administrators stay informed with current research findings and actively seek opportunities to translate research into practice in their unique learning environments. Through this workshop, we will explain the fundamentals of educational neuroscience and how it underpins all great teaching and learning, challenge common neuromyths and guide participants in creating a plan for their next steps with integrating MBE/SoL into their contexts. This will be beneficial for all teachers, parents and administrators, who will leave this session with current research, references and opportunities to continue developing their understanding of MBE/SoL beyond the scope of this session.

Over-diagnosing Dyslexia?
Outline of the cognitive basis of dyslexia; tap into its historical conceptualisation and the key principles of diagnostic assessment for the beginners or those new to the topic.
The focal point will be that standardised tests measuring underlying abilities are still commonly used to identify dyslexic individuals, even though it has not been possible to establish a clear enough definition of dyslexia to satisfactorily underpin these assessment tools.

Brief introduction to dyslexic variability, especially phonological and surface dyslexia, with examples of the diagnostic co-morbidity scope will be included, as well as a portrayal of why dyslexics are not all alike and therefore require different intervention strategies. We will also look at why about 10% of dyslexics cannot be easily classified due to the broad nature of their difficulties.
